Architectural layout of Atal Tinkering Lab showing 4 functional student zones and furniture
    NITI Aayog AIM Official Specifications
Mandatory physical room specifications, 4 functional zones (Ideation, Tinkering, Fabrication, Prototyping), electrical load distribution, ESD rubber matting, and furniture ergonomics required for NITI Aayog compliance.

    1. Mandatory Floor Space Requirements: 1,500 Sq. Ft. Blueprint

According to NITI Aayog’s operational guidelines, schools applying for or commissioning an Atal Tinkering Lab must allocate a minimum of 1,500 sq. ft. of dedicated, contiguous carpet area in plain regions. For institutions situated in designated hilly, northeastern, or island territories, a special concession allows a minimum carpet area of 1,000 sq. ft.

The room must be completely secure, well-ventilated, pest-proof, and brightly illuminated. It cannot be combined with an existing physics, chemistry, or biology lab; it must operate as an independent, standalone innovation studio.

    2. Architectural Layout: The 4 Functional Tinkering Zones

In accordance with the official AIM operational blueprint, an optimal 1,500 sq. ft. Atal Tinkering Lab is partitioned into four contiguous, workflow-aligned functional zones connected by a central 6-ft safety circulation spine:
